Using your VSP vision insurance in Rochester Hills: what it actually covers

Vision insurance is one of the most under-used benefits people have. Plans are designed to be used every year, and what you don't use, you lose. Here is how it works and how to make it count.

What a vision plan usually includes

• An annual eye exam for a small copay.
• An allowance toward frames (or toward contact lenses instead), once a year or every other year depending on your plan.
• Lenses, with basic single-vision or bifocal lenses covered and discounts on upgrades like progressives, anti-glare and photochromic.
• Discounts on a second pair, sunglasses or extras, on many plans.

In-network matters

Using an in-network provider means your copay and allowance apply directly and we handle the claim. Out of network, you usually pay in full and file for partial reimbursement. 20/20 Vision is in-network with VSP and works with most major vision plans.

Frames within your allowance

A common worry is that a boutique with Tom Ford and Prada on the wall has nothing "covered." Not true here. We keep a wide range of frames that fit inside typical allowances, and if you fall for something above it, you pay only the difference. Medical eye care is different

Vision plans cover routine exams and eyewear. If you come in for a red eye, a scratch, dry eye treatment or a diabetic eye exam, that's medical care, and it's billed to your regular health insurance rather than your vision plan. Bring both cards and we'll sort out which applies.

FSA and HSA

Glasses, contacts, prescription sunglasses and exams are eligible expenses for flexible spending and health savings accounts. If your FSA balance expires at year-end, December is a good time for a second pair or a year's supply of contacts.
