Blue light glasses: what's real, what's marketing, and what actually fixes screen eye strain

Blue light lenses are everywhere. The honest answer on what they do, what they don't, and the fixes that make screen days comfortable.

We get asked about blue light glasses almost every day, so here is the straight version, without the sales pitch.

Does screen blue light damage your eyes?

There is no good evidence that the blue light from phones and monitors damages the retina. The amount is tiny compared with an hour outdoors on a cloudy day. If a website tells you screens are blinding you, it's selling something.

So why do screens make eyes hurt?

Digital eye strain is very real, but blue light isn't the cause. Three things are:

What actually helps

Where blue light filtering does make sense

Blue-rich light in the evening can suppress melatonin and make it harder to fall asleep. If you scroll in bed, a blue-filtering coating, night mode on your devices, or simply stopping earlier can help sleep. Some people also find the coating takes the edge off harsh LED lighting. We'll happily add it to your lenses; we just won't tell you it's protecting your retina.

The bottom line

If your eyes hurt at work, the fix is usually a proper exam and a pair of glasses set for your desk, not a blue filter on the wrong prescription. Book an eye exam in Rochester Hills at (248) 375-0040 and tell Dr. Dolan how many hours a day you spend on screens; that number changes what he prescribes.
