Cataracts after 60: the early signs, when to act, and what happens next

Night driving getting harder? Colors a little dull? Cataracts creep up slowly. Here's how to recognize them and what the path forward looks like.

By 75, most people have some degree of cataract. It isn't a disease so much as the lens inside the eye slowly clouding with age, like a window fogging over years instead of minutes. The good news is that cataract treatment is one of the most successful procedures in medicine. The trick is knowing when you've reached that point.

Early signs

How we diagnose it

Cataracts are easy to see during a comprehensive exam: Dr. Dolan looks at the lens under magnification and grades how dense the clouding is and where it sits. Some cataracts sit in the center and affect vision early; others sit at the edge and can be watched for years. Dilation gives the clearest view, so bring sunglasses.

When surgery makes sense

Not when the cataract exists, but when it interferes with your life: when you've stopped driving at night, given up reading, or can't pass the vision test at the Secretary of State. Until then, updated glasses, anti-glare coatings and good lighting buy time. When it's time, we refer you to a trusted cataract surgeon in the area.

What surgery involves

The clouded lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial one in an outpatient procedure that usually takes under half an hour per eye. Most people see better within days. The replacement lens can be chosen to correct distance vision, astigmatism, and in some cases near vision too, which is a conversation worth having beforehand.

Before and after

We handle your care around the surgery: the measurements and records the surgeon needs, then the follow-up visits afterward, right here on Walton Blvd instead of at the surgical center. Once your eyes settle, we update your glasses, which are often much lighter than before.
