Eye exams in Rochester Hills: what to expect at 20/20 Vision
What an exam with Dr. Dolan actually involves, how long it takes, what to bring, and why we do it the slow way.
If it's been a while since your last eye exam, or you're new to Rochester Hills and looking for an eye doctor, here is what a visit to 20/20 Vision looks like from the moment you walk in. No surprises, no upsell, and you'll leave understanding your own eyes better than when you arrived.
Before you come
Bring your current glasses and contact lenses (or the boxes they came in), your vision insurance card, and a list of any medications you take. Many prescriptions for blood pressure, allergies, mood and hormones affect the eyes, and knowing what you take helps Dr. Dolan read what he sees. If you wear contacts, wear them in; we may ask you to take them out partway through. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes.
The exam itself
Dr. David Dolan, OD, does every exam personally. It starts with a conversation: how you see, what bothers you, what you do all day. Screens, driving at night, reading music, fly fishing; it all changes what we're aiming for. Then the measurements:
- Visual acuity, the familiar letter chart, with and without your current correction.
- Refraction, the "which is better, one or two" part, which pins down your exact prescription.
- Eye pressure, a quick check that screens for glaucoma, which has no symptoms until vision is already lost.
- Eye health under magnification, looking at the cornea, lens, eyelids and tear film with a slit lamp.
- The back of the eye, where Dr. Dolan checks the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels for early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic changes and even high blood pressure. Depending on your history he may dilate your pupils, which makes near vision blurry and eyes light-sensitive for a few hours, so bring sunglasses.
Before you leave, he walks you through what he found in plain language. If something needs watching, you'll know what it is and when to come back.
Then the fun part
If you need glasses, you walk about twenty feet into the boutique, where David and Sandra fit you from hundreds of frames: Tom Ford, Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Versace, Rag & Bone, Ray-Ban and Rudy Project, plus Tomato Glasses for kids. They measure the frame to your face and your prescription, so the lenses are cut precisely for the pair you chose. Contact lens wearers get fitted and, if it's your first time, taught to put them in and take them out before going home.

We're in-network with VSP and work with most major vision plans. Call with your plan name and we'll tell you your exam copay and frame allowance before you book. CareCredit is accepted for anything your plan doesn't cover.
