Using EyeMed at a Rochester Hills eye doctor: benefits, allowances and how to stretch them
EyeMed covers more than most members ever use. Here is how the exam copay, frame allowance and contact benefit actually work, and how to stack them smartly.
EyeMed is one of the largest vision plans in Michigan, common through employers, Medicare Advantage plans and individual policies. 20/20 Vision accepts EyeMed, and most members are surprised how far the benefits go once someone walks them through it. So here's the walkthrough.
What a typical EyeMed plan includes
- An eye exam every 12 months for a small copay, often $10 to $25.
- A frame allowance, commonly $130 to $200 depending on your employer's plan, usually every 12 or 24 months, and many plans add a percentage discount on the amount above the allowance.
- Lenses: standard single vision or bifocal lenses covered with a copay, and fixed member pricing on upgrades like progressives, anti-reflective and photochromic.
- Or contact lenses instead of glasses: an allowance you can put toward a supply, plus a contribution to the fitting on many plans.
Exact numbers vary by plan tier. Call us with the name on your card and we'll pull your actual benefits before you visit, so the price on the receipt matches what we told you on the phone.
How to stretch it
- Use it every cycle. Benefits reset whether you use them or not; skipping a year is money left behind.
- Aim the allowance well. We keep frames inside typical EyeMed allowances, including from names you'd expect to be out of reach, and the over-allowance discount softens the difference on designer styles.
- Stack FSA or HSA. Whatever your plan doesn't cover (upgrades, a second pair, prescription sunglasses) is FSA/HSA eligible.
- Split wisely in a family. Kids' frames plus a parent's contacts often uses two people's benefits better than one big purchase.
Medical visits are different
