What Michigan looks for
Michigan requires adequate distance acuity (with your glasses or contacts if you wear them) and a sufficient field of side vision to drive. If you pass only while wearing correction, the license carries a corrective-lenses restriction, which simply means: wear them when you drive. If the counter check raises questions, the Secretary of State can ask for a vision statement from an eye doctor, a form we can examine for and complete at the same visit.
Teen drivers: get ahead of it
A teenager heading into driver's training should have a comprehensive exam first, not just for the test but because driving is the first task many teens do that truly demands sharp distance vision at speed, at dusk, in rain. Renewals and the years after 60
The renewal check is where gradual changes surface. If headlights have grown halos, if oncoming glare lingers, if you've quietly stopped driving at night, don't wait for the counter to tell you. Make night driving easier regardless
- An up-to-date prescription matters most; even a small correction sharpens headlights back into points.
- Anti-reflective coating cuts the internal reflections that smear oncoming lights.
- Clean lenses and a clean windshield do more than any yellow "night driving" glasses, which we don't recommend.
